Diablo IV Season 15, possibly the best season yet!
What a season! Blizzard has created, arguably, the most exciting season of Diablo IV to date, and we can only hope this is a taste of whats to come in the release of Diablo V, expected Spring 2029.
I stepped away from Diablo IV for a while. I had spent so much time playing that I needed a break, and some distance from the constant cycle of levelling, farming and chasing the next upgrade.
But what a season to come back to.
For me, Season 15: Season of Hell’s Legacy is Diablo IV’s best season to date. It has brought back the excitement, curiosity and sense of community that make an ARPG so difficult to put down.
Celebrating the Diablo franchise’s landmark 30th anniversary, this season draws on three decades of characters, locations and encounters. Deckard Cain’s return brings a familiar presence to the seasonal story, while revisiting places such as Tristram Cathedral gives the adventure a real connection to Diablo’s history. And facing Diablo himself again, through the season’s recreated encounters, feels entirely fitting for this anniversary.
Then there is Whimsyshire. Its return brings that wonderfully strange side of Diablo back into view: bright colours, absurd creatures and a reminder that this famously dark series has always had room for a little ridiculousness. Alongside the familiar faces and locations, these discoveries make the anniversary feel like something players can explore.
The return of classic runeword gear adds another reason to keep hunting. These recipes have their roots in Diablo II and have been adapted for Diablo IV, allowing players to combine specific runes with suitable base equipment in the Horadric Cube to create items such as Enigma and Stealth. There is something satisfying about collecting the ingredients for a meaningful piece of gear and having a clear goal to work towards. It gives those drops a purpose beyond another trip to the salvage pile.
World-boss events have gained a new sense of anticipation, too. After a world boss falls, there is the possibility of Echo of Uber Diablo appearing—and with him, the opportunity to obtain Annihilus, the powerful Unique Horadric Seal. With bonuses to skills, attributes and resistances, it is the kind of reward that can make a substantial difference to a build. His appearance is not guaranteed, which makes the prospect of that encounter all the more exciting.
That excitement carries into Uber Tristram, where players are joining forces in pursuit of Mythic rewards, including the returning Hellfire Torch. Having a sought-after reward at the end of a shared challenge gives people a compelling reason to form groups and keep coming back together.
For me, the community has been one of this season’s greatest strengths. Players are pulling together for co-op runs, helping one another and trying to reach as many world-boss events as possible. There is a shared feeling that the next encounter might be the one everyone has been waiting for.
Within the community, it feels as though Season 15 is bringing players out of retirement while sparking the interest of newcomers.
For a series with fans around the world, this is a wonderful way to celebrate thirty years: giving longtime players reasons to return and new players a chance to discover what makes Diablo special.
I came back after needing a break. Now, I’m looking forward to the next session.
Well done, Blizzard. Season 15 has been exceptional—and, for me, the best reason yet to return to Sanctuary.
